lautering

Lautering is the process of separating  the liquid and desirable water soluble compounds from the solid remnants of the grain and other adjuncts in the mash by using the solid remnants, commonly referred to as the grain bed, as a filter. Lautering usually consists of a mashout, recirculation and sparging.
