A clone recipe is a recipe  whose end result is the same as the original recipe.  Commercial beer recipes cannot be directly scaled down to a homebrew size recipe and achieve the same tasting beer, factors such as the boil kettle size greatly affects things such as the hop utilization and thus modifications to the recipe are necessary to make the final product taste the same.
